The explanation that phases of the moon occur because the moon is in the shadow of the earth is wrong. The phases of the moon are caused by the position relations among earth, moon and sun.
The part lighted up by the sun may change because the moon revolves around the earth and repeats constant phases of the month seen from the earth.
