Math New Drill (Level 2) : Number sense and theory SNJ00-0703-L2 Find the capacity of the train

There is a train that just 32.5 % of the capacity can sit.

When 40 people get on this train, all of them can sit.

When 60 people get on this train, some cannot sit.

Find the capacity of this train.

Answer
160 persons

Solution
32.5 % of the capacity should be an integer.

According to 100 : 32.5 = 40 : 13, the number of people to be able to sit is a multiple of 13.

A multiple of 13 of more than 40 less than 60 is 52.

Thus, the number of people who can sit is 52.

Therefore the capacity is 52 × 40/13 = 160 persons.
